The account of the Japanese occupation of Malaya developed in this book is based in part on memories of events found in published memoirs and in interviews such as those assembled by the Oral history Department in Singapore.

These materials began to appear shortly after the war ended, but most were recorded after a considerable period of time. The three and a half years of Japanese rule in Malaya following the routing of the British, Dutch and Americans are generally considered to mark a profound transition in the history of the peninsula, but little is known about the period.

The Japanese Occupation of Malaya, Author: Kratoska. Paul H. The Japanese worked hard to convince the local 1942-1945 book that they were the actual saviours of Malaya while Britain was portrayed as an imperialist force that wished to exploit Malaya's resources.

However, in Novemberwhen the Japanese held the Greater East Asia Conference, both Malaya and Indonesia were excluded as the Japanese. Tomoyuki Yamashita (b. 8 NovemberOsugi Mura, Shikoku, Japan–d. 23 FebruaryManila, Philippines), was the Army Commander of the 25th Army that captured Malaya.

Malaya was a major prize for the Japanese as it produced 38% of the world’s rubber and 58% of the world’s tin. The capture of Singapore would provide Japan with a highly valuable military base in the region and it would also greatly undermine British authority in the region.

The Japanese commander for the attack on Malaya was General Yamashita. Format: Book; xiv, p.: ill. ; 23 cm. New perspectives on the Japanese occupation in Malaya and Singapore, / edited by Akashi Yo | National Library of Australia National Library of Australia.
